China Derby Looms as CSL Resumes: The Chinese Football Podcast

Domestic football takes centre stage again following the World Cup – and the CSL (and CFA Cup) have swung back into action at a frantic pace. Trying to keep on top of the fixture congestion, the pod run the rule over the new signings, new managers, and early post-break fixtures to see who is shaping up best.

There’s also time to dive into some of the off-field stories surrounding Chinese football – just who has been on the baijiu and thinks putting the national side in the CSL is a good idea? Is Chongqing sacking Paulo Bento straight after a win just the usual short-sighted club owner madness? And what does the stance taken by Beijing Guo’an on the new Nike kit deal mean for the league – and should we be congratulating them?

We wrap up with a China derby special feature – with Shenhua coasting in upper-mid table and Guo’an gunning for a title chase, just what does the looming fixture at Hongkou mean for both of these sides? The panel also share some fan’s-eye perspectives on the importance of this game and some key derby-day dramas of the past.

The Chinese Football Podcast is hosted by Wild East Football’s Steve Crooks, joined by Chinese football experts Brandon Chemers in Beijing and Cameron Wilson in Shanghai.

Steve hosts the Chinese Football Podcast, having joined the WEF team as correspondent for Shanghai Shenhua, the side he has followed since moving to Shanghai in 2010. Exiled from the Victorian town-centre idyll of Feethams along with his childhood football team, Steve spent many an (un)happy year on Hongkou's North Terrace along with the Shenhua Element Crew and Blue Devils before relocating to Sydney from where he continues to follow the Chinese game from afar.
