Months of football, a glut of goals, and countless rounds of punishment bingo and changes to the rules of an in-progress league have come down to this – a perfectly set-up winner-takes all title decider between Guangzhou Evergrande and Shanghai International Port Group. The panel hedge their bets and fancy the away side to set out for the draw which would leave them ahead with only two games to come – before the discussion gets a bit more feisty on whether the Xujiahui side would be the new champion the league needs, or a just another big-spending side buying their way to the title.
One other point we can all agree on is the magnitude of Wu Lei’s achievement in being the latest player to hit 100 top-flight goals, and how unexpectedly unpredictable the relegation scrap has become – with Henan and Chongqing hitting form and a few of the more established sides in a losing rut, the pod discussed the sides in the greatest danger – and whether anyone who isn’t mathematically safe yet can breathe easily just yet.
We wrap up with a bumper discussion of the China League One promotion scene and the complex web of relationships surrounding the last-day promotion shootout between Shenzhen and Greentown and tackle a quickfire round of topics ranging from cup final scheduling through to the podcast outro. We’ll be back for the final-day nerves, and looking forward to our regular end-of-season reviews.
