Dongbei Decay as Changchun Bottom Out in Relegation Dogfight: The Chinese Football Podcast

This week’s pod is all about a dramatic final day at the bottom of the table, with former champions and CSL mainstays Changchun Yatai set to join Guizhou in next year’s China League One after a losing a three-way head-to-head tiebreaker on 32 points.

How did a side with 21-goal Odion Ighalo get into this mess, and will they be able to bounce straight back? Comfort is in short supply as we run the rule over the squads for the relegated teams and also those who stayed up on the final day – TEDA, Henan and Chongqing may be set for more struggle next year despite their great escapes.

There’s also a special interview with WEF’s  Jeff Beresford-Howe on title celebrations in Xujiahui before we round out the pod with some listener questions on a couple of perennial favourite topics – where next for Steve, and the legacy of the CFA’s U23 rules.

The Chinese Football Podcast is hosted by Wild East Football’s Steve Crooks, joined by Chinese football experts Brandon Chemers in Beijing and Cameron Wilson in Shanghai.

Steve hosts the Chinese Football Podcast, having joined the WEF team as correspondent for Shanghai Shenhua, the side he has followed since moving to Shanghai in 2010. Exiled from the Victorian town-centre idyll of Feethams along with his childhood football team, Steve spent many an (un)happy year on Hongkou's North Terrace along with the Shenhua Element Crew and Blue Devils before relocating to Sydney from where he continues to follow the Chinese game from afar.
