Some Green, Green Grass and Goals: The Chinese Football Podcast s3e15

It’s been raining high-quality goals in the CSL – and whether your preference is cheeky backheels, long-range screamers or hilarious last-minute goalkeeper snafus, there’s something here for you – the panel discuss their personal favourites from a week high on action and drama.

We look back at a home upset for the champions – just a bad day at the office or something more worrying? – and the steady starts being made by Guo’an and Evergrande. After some poor starts for R&F and Renhe, which of the CSL’s Serbian managers should be feeling the heat, and could next week’s Tianjin derby or Dalian – Shandong match throw up another early-season crisis club?

Moving away from the pitch, the farcical last-minute postponement in Wuhan gets discussed – neither club nor government come out of this one looking good. With painted grass and music concerts the norm in many municipal stadia, should we be feeling sympathy for the clubs or is this another example of a stunning lack of professionalism? The discussion then turns to another club who have had some teething troubles with grounds – will City group be ruing their investment in China League Two already, and what are are thoughts on them starting so low in the pyramid and outside a Tier 1 city?

Host Steve Crooks is joined by Chinese football experts Cameron Wilson in Shanghai and Brandon Chemers in Beijing for this week’s episode.

Steve hosts the Chinese Football Podcast, having joined the WEF team as correspondent for Shanghai Shenhua, the side he has followed since moving to Shanghai in 2010. Exiled from the Victorian town-centre idyll of Feethams along with his childhood football team, Steve spent many an (un)happy year on Hongkou's North Terrace along with the Shenhua Element Crew and Blue Devils before relocating to Sydney from where he continues to follow the Chinese game from afar.
